Still On Track: a guide for performers between jobs

The time between performing contracts can be difficult to navigate. You may be auditioning, working another job to pay the bills, or trying to stay ready for the next opportunity while wondering when it will come.

That’s why I wanted to share Still On Track: Show Business Not Show Friends, a guide written by my colleague, fellow performer and good friend David Burilin.

David draws on around 18 years of experience in musical theatre, including West End work, tours, cruise ships and the many other jobs that have supported him along the way.

The guide looks at the parts of a performing career that training doesn’t always prepare you for: separating your sense of worth from whether you’re currently employed, keeping your skills ready on a budget, preparing for auditions when you’re exhausted, and managing the practical business of being a performer. It also includes printable audition checklists and a guide to London audition venues.

I think it could be particularly useful if you’re about to graduate and wondering what comes next, or if you’re already working professionally and finding the gaps between contracts challenging. David writes with honesty, humour and the perspective of someone who knows what those periods feel like.
